Doctor Stupidity

My sister went to her doc for a checkup and blood work. She's been losing weight on a low-carb diet and has lost about 90 lbs. He wouldn't give her most of her lab results except the cholesterol numbers which were:

Total cholesterol: 7.26 (281)
Trigs: .96 (85)
HDL 1.95 (75)
LDL 4.87 (188)

Besides the slighly high Total her trigs and HDL are fantastic and her LDL isn't bad either. Guess what the doctor did? He gave her a prescripton for Lipitor which she has no intention of taking. What an ass.

But let's say you are less informed that she is? You'd start down the road of prescription drugs which would make you sicker and sicker.

Well done to your sister for the 90lb weight loss.

    All the best Jan

    1. Thanks Jan. She has read almost all the low-carb, ketogenic books I have so she's more informed that the usual person. Plus, since I'm the oldest she knows what I have gone through with all my health issues and that I no longer go to doctors unless I absolutely have to. When I do go I tell them that I am very pro-active with my health and they need to work with me as an equal partner and not act like they are God. The last doctor I went to agree with me and agreed to be my family physician. lol

  2. I don't know where in the world your sister is located, but where I live, it is illegal for a doctor to refuse to give lab results to a patient. (They still do it all the time, but there is a complaint system which tends to work, I would say.)

I have no patience left for that kind if sh*tty behavior from doctors, so I would definitely complain. Maybe the doctor will think twice next time.

    1. We live in Canada and I have never been refused copies of my bloodwork albeit some grumble under their breath and charge $1 per page thinking this will discourage me. They are no longer my doctors. There is no doctor alive that can win a brow-beating session with me, lol.

    2. She phoned the lab and they were surprised but told her they would mail her the results.

  4. WOW, I have never heard of being denied your test results. They are *YOURS*, after all. Good for her for calling after them.

It also continues to blow my mind how cavalierly doctors prescribe prescription drugs. Thank goodness you and your sister know better. Sounds like it's time for a new DR. Oh, and GREAT JOB to her on her enormous weight loss and great cholesterol numbers! That HDL is pretty exciting.

    1. Yes her HDL is great and so are her trigs. She is very persistent and doing a great job at not cheating, unlike her older sister.

  5. Exactly! I've been 'fighting' my doctor for over 2 years now over statins. She knows I refuse. I think she finally gets it, but it's been a struggle. It's sad, and it's scary. :(

    1. Stick to your guns by being pro-active with your health Gwen. It's the only way to survive nowadays. Most Doctors haven't caught up with the latest research yet.
